WHY CASA 1537?

Casa (house), our spaces’ versatility means they can be distributed and decorated to your liking, as if you were in your own home.
1537, the year in which the construction of the cathedral church of Cartagena is completed, presided over by Bishop Fray Tomás del Toro. The same place where Casa 1537 currently operates.
OUR HISTORY
Casa 1537’s history has been influenced by the city of Cartagena de Indias’ own journey and evolution. Thus, we’d like to talk about the most influential periods:
COLONIAL
The construction of Casa 1537 started during the colonial era right in the founding block of Cartagena de Indias, the same place occupied by the First Cathedral Church.

In 1535 Fray Tomás del Toro, Cartagena’s first Bishop, was given the mission to build the First Church of the city. Two years later, in 1537, the work is finished.
​
Cartagena had basic needs deficiencies such as drinkable water supply. A fire broke out in 1552 destroying all the buildings in the city, mostly made out of cane and palms. After this disaster, the Second Cathedral was ordered to be built in stone and tiles in the same place. In 1612, the Cathedral was moved to what is now known as La Plaza de La Proclamación.
The building previously occupied by the old church was granted to the religious community of San Juan de Dios, and the current building that housed the San Sebastián Hospital was built between 1613 and 1775, as well as the Church of San Cosme y Damián.

Casa 1537 has been declared a national monument through the 877 resolution of 2006.

Located within the historic center of Cartagena, near the Clock Tower and the Cathedral of Santa Catalina de Alejandría.

We’re the only event venue within the walled city that can host a large number of people at the same time.

Each of our spaces offers air conditioning and has been adapted with thermoacoustics.
ARCHITECTURE
During the restoration process our goal was bringing this building back to its origins.
